We measure too many six-figure projector installs in rooms with 300 ms midband decay and 80 Hz nulls at the main seat. Gear cannot buy its way past physics.
First reflections and RT60
Treat side walls at the mirror points before upgrading speakers. In a 20×14 theater, 2-inch fiberglass panels at first reflections dropped RT60 from 420 ms to 280 ms — more audible than swapping interconnects.
Ceiling clouds matter when seating is far from the boundary; aim for 200–250 ms in dedicated cinemas, slightly higher in multipurpose lounges if live conversation matters.
Bass management
Distributed subwoofers beat a single prestige box for seat-to-seat consistency. Two subs diagonally opposed reduced 20–40 Hz variance from 12 dB to 4 dB in our test room. Dirac and Trinnov help, but physical placement still sets the ceiling.
Avoid generic fabric art that only absorbs highs — use tuned panels or hybrid traps that address low-mid buildup behind perforated screens.
Spending order
Budget sequence for integrators: structural bass control, first reflections, projector calibration, then speaker upgrades. Clients who skip straight to flagships without treatment invariably schedule a revisit within a year.
